Lifeguarding

Lifeguarding

The purpose of the Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard candidates with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over.

Prerequisites
Must be 15 years of age
Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Participants may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Participants should place their hands under the armpits.
Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Participants should not swim the distance under the water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Shallow Water Lifeguarding

The purpose of the Shallow Water Lifeguarding courses is to provide entry-level shallow water lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies in shallow water up to 7-feet deep and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services personnel take over.

Prerequisite
1. Be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the course.
2. Complete the following swimming prerequisites:
For facilities that are up to 7 ft deep: Swim 100 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. You may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed.Swim goggles may be used.
Tread water for 2 minutes, using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
Complete a timed event within 50 seconds: Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using the front crawl or breaststroke.Your face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. Submerge to a depth of 4 to 5 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and walk or swim 20 yards to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object at the surface of the water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Lifeguarding Instructor

Prerequisites
Is at least 17 years of age on the last day of the instructor courses.
Possesses a current basic-level certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED.
Has successfully completed the online Introduction to the Lifeguarding Instructor Course prior to the precourse skills session.
Has obtained all instructor and participant materials before entering the first session of the instructor course. Materials consist of: American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor’s Manual (print). Lifeguarding course presentation and/or DVD. American Red Cross Lifeguarding Manual (print or digital)
Has successfully completed the precourse skills session.

Waterfront Lifeguarding

The purpose of the Waterfront Skills module is to teach lifeguards the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to emergencies in nonsurf, open-water areas found at public parks, resorts, summer camps and campgrounds.

Lifeguarding Crossover

The purpose of a lifeguarding basic-level crossover course is to give individuals with a current lifeguarding certification from an approved training provider the opportunity to participate in an abbreviated course to earn an American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification or Shallow Water Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification. This course is designed for participants that are proficient in most skills, including water rescue skills, First Aid and CPR/AED. Additional time may be required if course participants are not proficient in the skills not taught in this outline, such as First Aid and CPR/AED.

Prerequisites
Be at least 15 years of age on or before the last scheduled course date.
Possess a basic-level Lifeguarding certification, or documentation of current lifeguarding credentials showing that the individual has successfully completed a formal lifeguarding course with one of the following training agencies:
Canadian Red Cross, YMCA, Ellis & Associates, Boy Scouts of America (BSA),StarGuard ELITE
Successfully complete the eLearning portion of the Lifeguarding course, including the final written exam. Successfully complete the swimming skill prerequisites:

Specialty Trainings:

Mermaid Experience

Experience teaches participants how to care for their rails and to swim safely with a mermaid tail. Basic skills are reviewed followed by the use of a mono fin and tail. All skills are taught in shallow water and will progress to deeper water based on the pool. Mermaids will learn to dolphin kick on their front and back. Fluke splashes, core rolls, and synchronized swimming will be incorporated into fun activities and games.

Basic Snorkeling

Training to teach the principals and safe practices of the art of snorkeling. Students will learn how to select and care for equipment. Students will learn the different types of kicks, surface dives and how to clear the snorkel and mask.

The Basic Swim Instructor certification is designed for instructor candidates who may wish to focus on his or her teaching fundamental swimming skills to children and general water safety education or may not have the advanced skills necessary to become a full Water Safety Instructor.

Basic Life Support Trainings

Administering Emergency Oxygen

Psychological First Aid: Supporting Yourself and Others During COVID -19

The COVID-19 Pandemic is challenging individuals and families in new ways. As such, psychological first aid is needed by individuals and families.

The Red Cross offers a Psychological First Aid: Supporting Yourself and Others During COVID-19 online only course designed to help individuals build resilience and support themselves and lend support to others during and following the COVID-19 outbreak.

Returning to Work During COVID-19 - Safe Work Practices

The COVID-19 Pandemic is challenging employees and businesses in new ways. The Red Cross offers an online course designed to help individuals review measures that employees and employers can take to continue to prevent a resurgence in cases of COVID-19 and keep individuals, families and communities safe as businesses reopen and workers return to workplaces.

Bloodborne Pathogens

Designed for those who are at risk for on the job exposure to blood and other bodily fluids in the workplace. The course teaches staff how bloodborne pathogens are spread, how to avoid exposure and what to do if exposed to infectious material.

This course is one of the requirements of the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard. After taking this course, students should talk with their employer about their workplaces specific policies and procedures. Those who complete the training receive a Bloodborne Pathogens Training certification valid for one year.

Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine Auto-Injector

This online course will teach you the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis and how to care for a person having a severe allergic reaction, including how to administer epinephrine using an auto-injector device.

The course, which includes video, activities that reinforce key information and a learning assessment, will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

First Aid/CPR/AED Courses

Be prepared to provide care at home, at school or in your community by learning the appropriate care to provide for first aid, breathing and cardiac emergencies. Following OSHA’s Good Faith efforts guidance, the Red Cross developed a One-year Provisional Certification Offering.

The One-Year Provisional Certification Class, is an offering that allows customers during Covid-19 to purchase an online provisional class, independently of the instructor led skill session. Customers will have up to one- year from the completion date on their online provisional certificate to complete their instructor led skill session. Upon successful completion of the instructor led skill session, the student will be issued the standard two-year Red Cross Certification that meets OSHA regulations.

First Aid for Severe Bleeding

The First Aid for Severe Bleeding Online course will prepare you to recognize severe, life-threatening bleeding emergencies and to take action to stop the flow of blood.

You will learn how and when to control bleeding by applying a tourniquet and hemostatic dressing. This interactive course includes audio and video and takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.You must pass a final quiz to complete the course.

First Aid for Opioid Overdoses

The First Aid for Opioid Overdoses Online course will provide you with the knowledge and confidence you need to respond to a suspected opioid overdose emergency.

You will learn to identify the signs and symptoms of a suspected opioid overdose and then the appropriate care to provide based on the responsiveness of the person.This course includes information on how to use several different naloxone products — a nasal atomizer, Narcan and EVZIO — to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. This interactive course includes audio and video and takes approximately 45 minutes to complete.You must pass a final quiz to complete the course.

Cat and Dog First Aid

You love your pets and want to keep them happy – and providing a healthy lifestyle and being prepared to deliver first aid care for your pet is the best way to do that!

In this 35- minute online course, you will learn the basics in caring for cats and dogs through a variety of topics – from understanding and checking your pet’s vital signs, to preventative care for cats and dogs, to caring for the most critical emergency situations – including breathing and cardiac emergencies, wounds, bleeding, and seizures.

Babysitter Basics

The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training course is to provide youth who are planning to babysit with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care for children and infants.

This training will help participants to develop leadership skills; learn how to develop a babysitting business, keep themselves and others safe and help children behave; and learn about basic child care and basic first aid.

Lifeguard Management

The Lifeguard Management course is designed to prepare aquatic professionals to effectively manage lifeguards and help keep patrons, staff and facilities safe.

This highly interactive, 3.5-hour course is completely online and includes video lessons, scenario based activities and a final exam. There are no prerequisites for this course. The person may or may not have a lifeguarding background, and may manage seasonal or year-round operations. Successful participants receive a certificate that is valid for 2 years.

Water Safety for Parents and Caregivers Online Course

The Water Safety for Parents and Caregivers Online Course focuses on developing an awareness of the risks of drowning and how to minimize those risks, especially for young children.

This online course teaches parents and caregivers about the concepts of the circle of drowning prevention, water competency and the chain of drowning survival. It also provides guidance for applying water safety to common environments and situations where children are most at risk for drowning.

Coaches who do not hold a current Lifeguarding Certification must complete the In Water Skills Session or complete the USA Swimming checklist after successfully complete the online content.

The American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches program, which was developed in partnership with USA Swimming, is designed to teach
those involved in competitive swimming including coaches, officials, athletic trainers and aquatic exercise trainers, how to help: Maintain a comfortable and safe environment for swimmers. Prevent accidents and emergencies. Respond to swimmers with illnesses or injuries in water or on land.
